Ratan Tata is an Indian industrialist, philanthropist, and the former chairman of Tata Sons, one of the largest conglomerates in India. Born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, India, Ratan is the grandson of the founder of Tata group, Jamshedji Tata.

Education and Early career

Ratan Tata completed his primary education at the campion School in Mumbai and went on to pursue degree in architecture from Cornell University in the United States. After completing his degree, he worked briefly with an architecture firm in Los Angeles before returning to India to join the Tata grope

Career at Tata group

Ratan Tata joined the Tata group in 1962 and initially worked in Tata steel division. in 1971, he was appointed the director in charge of the National-Radio and Electronic Company (NELCO), a Tata Group company that manufactured electronic product. In 1981, he was appointed the chairman of Tata industries, a holding company for several Tata group companies.

In 1991. Ratan Tata was appointed the chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata group. Under his leadership, the tat Group expanded globally and acquired several foreign companies, including Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus. He also initiated several social welfare projects, including the Tata Nano car,  a low cost car aimed at providing affordable transportation to million of people in India.

In 2007, Ratan Tata created history by acquiring UK-based luxury car brands Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford Motor Company for $2.3 billion. The actitation was considered a significant achievement for the Tata group, as it marked the company's entry into global luxury car market.

In 2012, Ratan Tata stepped down as the chairman of Tata Sons, and was succeeded by Cyrus Mistry However, following a dispute between Ratan Tata and Cyrus Mistry, Ratan Tata returned to the role of chairman in 2016 and served until retainment in 2017.

Philanthropy


Apart from his business achievements, Ratan Tata is also known for his philanthropic work. HE established the Tata Trusts, which are among the oldest and largest philanthropic organization in India. The Trusts funds are used in the various projects in the area of education, health, and rural development, among others. The Trusts also play an active role in disaster relief efforts, including the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and the 2015 Nepal earthquake.


Awards and Honorary 


In recognition  of his contribution to business and philanthropy, Ratan Tata received numerous award and honours, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, two of highest civilian honours in India. he has also been awarded honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Cambridge and the University of Warwick.
